Veronica Silvia Biglia
Gabiano (Al)
Veronica Silvia Biglia, born in 1988, is from Gabiano in the Basso Monferrato region of Piedmont. A cheerful personality, she started a career as a model at a young age, before becoming pregnant at 24. Immediately after giving birth in June 2013, she contracted Transverse Myelitis, a clinical immune-mediated central nervous system syndrome which causes neuronal damage to the spinal cord.
Veronica started using a wheelchair, and began a rehabilitation programme that inevitably led her to get involved in sport. Throughout those years she raised her daughter Emily (she calls herself a ‘Mapà’, i.e. a single mother) and found a new love for canoeing. This discipline made her feel good and at ease straight away and in January 2016 she began training competitively. After only two months she won the first of her 15 Italian titles. To her credit she also has a bronze medal in the World Cup and participation in the Paralympics in Tokyo.
